After Fredrick Sabin sold his business Fredrick Sabin Co. to his employees his son Edward R. decided he wanted to be back in the heating & plumbing business so in 1903 Edward R. Sabin Company was founded. The first location was a garage at 63rd and Walnut Streets in Philadelphia. Later they moved to 4710 Market St.
In 1913 Edward R. Sabin Company was Incorporated. In 1950 they built a beautiful colonial two story office building at 5508 Chestnut Street with a warehouse that ran from Chestnut Street to Sansom Street. In July of 1969 they moved to a smaller location at 8729 West Chester Pike, Upper Darby, Pa. their present location.
After Mr. Sabin’s retirement Harvey Lee Bond ran the company until 1956 when he turned the company over to Fredrick Sabin President and Edward R. Sabin, Jr. Vice President , sons and grandsons of the Founders.
In 1968 Edward Jr. left the company to work for a boiler manufacturer’s representative.
In 1973 after the death of Fred Sabin the Company was purchased by Howard R. Milsted, Jr. President & Theodore R. Coverly Vice President. Ted started with the company in 1950 as a electrician and serviceman. In 1960 he became service manager until Howard & he purchased Edward R. Sabin Co.
Howard after graduating from college in September immediately started with the company in October 1955 as a heating estimator and designer. Howard became vice president in 1971.
In October 2006 Howard celebrated 50 years with the company. In addition to being active in the everyday function of the company Howard is the successful author of two books. One is a romantic novel called “A Real Love Story” and a children’s book called “Just Another Collie”.
Darin R. Milsted, Howard’s second son started working part time at Sabin Co. when he was 13. After graduating from high school he became a full time employee while still attending trade school for seven years at night. When his mentor Ted Coverly retired in 1989 Darin purchased his stock and became Vice President the position he still holds. Darin has been with Sabin Co. for almost thirty years. He is a licensed electrician; licensed heating and air conditioning technician Darin is noted for completely rewiring an historical church with the plans and his name being sent to the Archives in Washington DC.
In 1989 the name Edward R. Sabin Company was changed to Sabin & Associates, Incorporated.
Most of Sabin’s employees have been with the company for many years. Many have retired from there.
Darius W. Moore was employed for fifty years, starting out in the warehouse and worked his way up to become the purchasing agent and estimator retiring in 1999.
In fact several employees who retired are second generation.
B. Robert Toomey and Philip J. Notto are such examples. Toomey started with the Company in 1952 and has returned to the company for the third time. His father Raymond started in 1927 and retired in 1967.
Philip J. Notto, whose father Samuel worked for Sabin until he retired in 1983. Philip started in 1962. He became the Master Plumber in 1973 and held that position until his retirement in Nov. 2004.
The Master Plumber now is Christopher Gallagher who first started with the Sabin Co. in 1990.
In 1903 Sabin started out doing residential plumbing & heating installations. They performed this work in most of the houses built in Philadelphia. In the 30s & 40s E.R. Sabin Co. was one of the largest residential contractors on the East Coast. From the 40s on Sabin Co. has been doing commercial work.
They have installed the plumbing, heating, and air conditioning in Churches, Schools, Hospitals, country clubs, nursing homes, offices, factories, apartment buildings, state liquor stores, state parks, stadiums, dialysis units, transportation facilities, trailers, tug boats, and many more.
Sabin and Associates still services these buildings. In addition they provide twenty-four hour emergency service for plumbing, heating, air conditioning. Provide service contracts and preventive maintenance programs.
One of the reasons for their longevity is the wide range of mechanical work they can perform and their commitment to the customer’s requirements.
Sabin & Associates is able to make the problem safe, then repair or replace it as the emergency arises.
